To celebrate the first anniversary of the opening of our Outdoor Leadership Centre at St. George’s Park, Grahame Robb Associates held our first ever Corporate Taster Day on site. The event provided local organisations with the opportunity to experience a range of team development challenges.

After a quick icebreaker exercise, delegates were thrown in at the deep end on the low ropes course (we tracked their progress on the course, along with other activities, live via Twitter on #corporatetaster). “This is an excellent task to kick off the day. There are so many similarities between the success factors which can impact team performance on the course and within an organisation,” commented Joe Mackintosh, a Senior Instructor at GRA. “How much time a team spends on the planning phase, how they react to unforeseen difficulties and whether they can communicate effectively throughout the task will all determine how the team performs. We see the exact same obstacles in the workplace and it’s important to draw out this learning in the session review.”

After lunch, the group split up, with some attempting to scale our 40ft climbing tower, while others chose to take part in a ground-based, problem solving initiative task. They then came back together to try their hand at Corporate Structures – a high-energy, indoor, collaborative challenge in which the group receive structural blueprints and the required materials to build it. They must then focus on continuous improvement to produce increasingly rapid results in completing the structure.

Taking on board the feedback from the morning session, the team changed its approach and focused on incremental improvements to its performance before their final attempt at the challenge – in which they scored very highly. Following this positive result, the group finished their day with a tour of the state-of-the-art National Football Centre.

Due to the positive feedback from the event, Grahame Robb Associates will be running another Corporate Taster Day for local organisations in 2016. To register your interest, please email or call 01283 575905.
